The additive manufacturing industry has grown up to 30% over the past five years, adding thousands of new collar jobs to the American workforce. Yet just because the additive manufacturing industry has jobs, it doesn’t mean there isn’t difficulty filling them. New collar positions, like the ones created by AM, value technical skills over college degrees— something difficult to find in today’s workforce.
3Degrees is working to solve this problem. By partnering with local Chicago businesses, 3Degrees is looking to bring opportunity to the underserved West Side of Chicago. Providing training, mentorship, and funding through a 4-week intensive additive training program, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of machine operation, build prep, post processing, software, and more.
Practical Skills and Actionable Content for Advanced Manufacturing
Chicago is home to a number of cutting-edge 3D Printing manufacturers. As part of this course, students will be given behind the scenes access to these sites and learn from industry experts the ins and outs of the advanced manufacturing space. Throughout the course students are able to see inside cutting edge 3D Printing facilities to learn more about the skills required to work in these environments. Tours are hosted by some of the world leaders in Additive Manufacturing technology including Renishaw, Impossible Objects, and mHub.
Each student will have the opportunity to access content from one of the leading knowledge centers in the 3D Printing industry – Society of Manufacturing Engineers – Tooling U. These courses (regularly) thousands of dollars will be provided at no cost to each student and will be facilitated in person by 3D Printing professionals so students have the ability to ask questions and have direct tutoring in the content. The successful completion of these modules will enable students to be credentialed within the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Certified Manufacturing Technologist (CMfgT) certification.
Each student will be paired with at least one career mentor from the 3D Printing industry. These mentors will span a variety of industries including aerospace, medical, automotive companies and will help the students start to build a lasting network within the industry. We actively work with each student to find career opportunities through internships and full time work placements.
